Before I get to the big news about this Friday, there's some other big news out of Los Angeles last night. My old friend and current employer Esperanza Spalding won the Grammy for new artist of the year. This is an especially big moment for a singer and bassist who is rooted in creative and improvised music (call it "Jazz"). She continues to thoughtfully and eloquently advocate for creativity and integrity in her art and message - making her a positive role model who distances herself from the material realm of a music industry mainstream in which many have lost hope.
